AGC Gauging System (Hess Patent)

Purpose

Used to select a suitable compression sequence to prevent substrate damage, including establishing a maximum holding force/pressure for the substrate prior to the insertion of the substrate and mat material into the raw tube.

AGC Gauging System

Description

An unsized shell is loaded into the insertion holding block, and dressed substrates (assembled with supporting mat) are loaded into the assembly trays on the insertion Machine. The operator will then actuate the cycle start button and an insertion plunger pushes the dressed substrate into several funneled guides. Insertion motion stops at a controlled position, placing the substrate and mat under the inspection units. The inspection units will then extend via a force-controlled feed back at a maximum velocity equal to the sizer maximum velocity and determine an average diameter. A second average diameter is calculated after the inspection units are extended a second time. The substrate assembly is then fully inserted into the tube.

The data collected can be evaluated for several characteristics but is not limited to: Deviation from average, Average 1st end, Average 2nd end, Average overall, Tolerance Min Max, and Deviation Min Max.

This unit consists of a minimum of four hydraulic force controlled plungers, a minimum of four changeable contact plates, a minimum of four position feedback loops, and one funnel frame and guide unit. Part dependant tooling for the gage station includes: eight quick change contact plates. All controls for the gage machine will be handled by PLC. Changeover for the gage station will require replacement or adjustment of gage station pads and funnel guides.
