AC Flash Welder
Purpose
This is a heavy duty AC flash butt welding machine designed primarily for use in the manufacture of tire rims. Clamping and upset force applications are hydraulic. A heavy duty mechanical cam actuation mechanism controls the slide motions prior to upset force application.

Description
The main frame is of extra heavy duty fabricated steel construction and precision machined as required at the mating surfaces for proper fit of adjoining components.
The product is clamped on either side of the weld joint by a pair of heavy duty alligator-style horns. To assure even clamp force distribution across the width of the product, there are heavy duty pivots which support the product clamping electrodes. The clamping levers are actuated by hydraulic cylinders.
The moving slide assembly is supported and guided by heavy duty precision adjustable rollers, which operate on heat treated alloy steel bibs. All bearing surfaces are covered to prevent contamination by welding debris.
The slide motion control is a combination mechanical cam hydraulic system. The cam linkage assembly provides the initial positioning and burnoff infeed of the moving slide. At the proper point in the machine cycle, a direct acting hydraulic cylinder overrides the cam to provide the proper upset force at the weld joint interface.
The welding transformer is mounted within the lower portion of the machine frame. It utilizes water cooled secondaries and bus bars. Eight voltage settings are available.
The welder secondary circuit consists of water-cooled copper castings, precision-machined and silver plated at the current carrying interfaces. To connect the power to the moving electrode a series of laminated copper shunts are provided. The shunts are out of the flash line and are not normally affected by weld spatter. The frame opening through which the secondaries protrude from the transformer is thoroughly sealed with insulating materials and stainless steel guarding, to shield the transformer from the ingress of welder spatter.
A pneumatically actuated flash shield is raised in front of the welding zone to minimize flash spray onto operating personnel or surrounding equipment.
The hydraulic power supply includes the motor, pump, filters, and certain hydraulic valves.
