Bull Wheel Coiler
Purpose
To bend straight metal bars into circles on a production basis. The machine can form single rings or angle iron from pre-cut lengths of stock, or it can also be made to coil multiple-turn spirals, to be cut into single circles at a later operation. Typical products which can be formed include rims, side rings, locking rings and axle housing reinforcing rings.

Description
This is a 4-roll pinch-type "bull wheel" coiler with one hydraulically actuated, moving spindle, two adjustable non-moving spindles and one spindle whose position is fixed in the machine. The bull wheel and lower center spindles are hydrostatically driven, providing for automatic compensation for tooling radius variations, thereby reducing tool wear and product scuffing due to improper peripheral roll speeds. There is no need to change gears during changeover, and the setup man and tooling design engineer need not worry about roll diameters.
The basic machine frame is of extra heavy duty welded steel construction. Prior to machining, all weldments are thermally stress relieved. The spindles are all supported by anti-friction bearings, with Timken tapered roller bearings absorbing thrust loads. All slides and wear surfaces are made from an aluminum-bronze against steel combination material, which has proven to be extremely durable with minimal frictional losses.
The bull roll spindle is cantilevered to permit easy part unloading. To compensate for spindle deflections, product variations, and other factors, the bull roll spindle is also tiltable.
The lower spindles are supported on both ends, creating the ideal deflection situation, i.e. symmetrical deflections. To facilitate tooling changeover of these spindles, the outboard bearing retainers are easily removable, providing free access to the working portions of the spindle shafts.
To facilitate part loading, the main frame of the machine is tilted to permit horizontal loading of the straight sections. Roll position adjustments include the entry and exit rolls, and the bull roll lowered position. Precision counters on the lower rolls and a scale on the bull roll provide repeatability of adjustments.
