DC Butt Welder
Purpose
To butt weld light and heavy truck drop center strip stock rim bands, using either flash or non-flash welding sequences, whichever is most suitable for the product being welded.

Description
This machine is of heavy duty, stress relieved fabrications, precision machined for proper fit of mating components.
The main frame is of heavy box type arrangement, providing a sturdy, low deflection base for the precision operations expected of such a machine. Mounted on the top of the main frame are a stationary and a movable platen, each equipped with a heavy duty alligator style clamps which locate and hold the material edges during welding. The upper electrodes are adjustable to permit equal force distribution across the band width. The lower clamp tooling also serves as the electrical conductors, and delivers the welding current to the joint to be welded.
The moveable welding platen is supported by precision recirculating linear bearings which ride on hardened rails for maximum stiffness with minimum deflections. The slide motion is actuated by a direct-acting hydraulic cylinder. Burnoff motions are controlled by a servo-hydraulic control system. Upset motions are controlled by modulated pressure relief valves which control upset force.
The DC power pack includes six single phase transformers arranged in such a way that each group of three transformers operates together, with their outputs full-wave rectified and connected in parallel. A special water-cooled buss bar arrangement connects the externally mounted power supply; the unit is equipped with several temperature and water flow monitors which are integrated with the control system.
The control of the weld parameters is by a Medar micro-processor based control system which controls the weld slide hydraulics and the firing circuits to the power supply. A printer is supplied to permit observation of welder performance, and a 3-channel chart recorder are available as an option.
