Horizontal Expander

Purpose

To automatically expand, to finished size, tubeless truck rims. For optimum productivity and operator convenience, this machine is only offered with complete automation.

Design Features

This machine is a hydraulically actuated, double moving head horizontal expander press, designed with the specific purpose of final expanding D.C. Strip Stock Rims.

The main frame of this machine is made from extra heavy duty, fully stress relieved steel weldments, as are the rams and other major components.

The two expander heads each feature 12 radially moving jaws. The heads are individually adjustable in expanded diameter to permit fine adjustments of the individual bead seats. The cones are made from ion-nitrided steel, ground to minimize friction. To ensure maximum wear from the sliding surfaces, a fully automated, centralized lubrication system is provided, to properly distribute the correct amount of grease to those critical points. The jaws are returned radially by springs. The expander backup plates are separated from the ram bolsters by spring pressure. This return system will assure complete diametral collapse before the heads can be withdrawn from the product, protecting full flange curl products and tooling from damage.

The automation, also hydraulically actuated, includes a short input chute, an overhead mounted rim stop assembly, a diagonally stroking gripper assembly to advance the product to the working position, through chutes through the machine, and an exit mechanism. The automatic loader is a fairly simple device due to the double moving heads of the expander. The product remains stationary during forming.
