Horizontal Flare Press

Purpose

To perform the flaring operation in the sequence of manufacturing tubeless truck rims.

The flaring of the coiled and welded cylindrical bands is accomplished by a pair of conical shaped dies, each of which is carried on a moving slide situated on a horizontal axis.

For optimum productivity and operator convenience, this machine is only offered with complete automation.

Description

The main frame of the press is of extra heavy fabricated steel construction. The weldments are thermally stress relieved, and are precision machined at mating surfaces for precision fit. Openings are provided in certain locations in the main frame to permit access to internal working components.

The moving heads of the press are sturdy box-construction castings, with replaceable precision ground slides, oil lubricated. The heads are actuated by heavy duty toggle linkages, mechanically coupled for proper synchronization. The closed positions of the heads are controlled by a mechanical stop in the primary drive linkage.

Actuation of the head stroke is hydraulic, with a single cylinder mounted at one end of the machine.

All toggle links are supported by heavy duty bronze bushings riding on hardened alloy steel pins, each provided with automatic lubrication.

The closed position of the heads are individually adjustable with an eccentric pivot in the final link for each head.

Lubrication for all pivot points and slides is done by a Trabon or equivalent centralized automatic lubrication system. The system is equipped with low lubrication level and high lubricant pressure warning systems, with electrical warnings on the main control panel.

Flare die lubrication. Each slide is equipped with a manifold with nozzles to direct water/oil emulsion onto the tooling between cycles. The lubricant supply pressure and flow are to be provided by the customer's central sump/recirculating system.

The automation includes a short infeed chute, an escapement mechanism to permit one part at a time into the loading position of the infeed shuttle, and the shuttle mechanism which feeds the product diagonal upward into the tooling area. The motions of the automation are all hydraulic, providing optimum control of speeds and forces.

The chutes and guides in the automation are adjustable for product width and diameter. The infeed shuttle utilizes a nest which is developed for each product diameter, simplifying setup.

The exit chute system receives the flared blanks and directs them to the next operation. This system contains a mechanism which prohibits oversize (i.e., broken) rings from passing, and automatically ejects them from the line to reduce jam-ups in the subsequent profiling operations.

All electric, hydraulic, and pneumatic control systems conform to J.I.C. standards and customer preferred components listings wherever practical. Hydraulic power units feature rubber mounted motors and pumps to minimize noise; proper filtration at inlet and return lines; and an oil to water heat exchanger for temperature control.
