Longitudinal Trimmer
Purpose
To trim the I.D. and O.D. of the D.C. or flash butt weld joint of cylindrical steel bands during the manufacture of passenger car and light truck rims. With the machine in automatic operation, the temperature of steel weld joints will exceed 538ºC at the time of trimming to ensure good surface finish and maximum tool life.

Description
The cylindrical rim blank is placed with the weld between the horns with the band encircling the upper horn. Upon cycle initiation, the upper horn is pulled downward by a pair of clevis-mounted hydraulic cylinders. The band is clamped securely on either side of the weld by a pair of clamp bars.
A hydraulic cylinder pushes "T" shaped rams outward, away from the machine. There are three cutters on each ram, adjusted to broach off the O.D. and I.D. weld flash. Behind the last cutter on each ram is a wire brush. An air jet travels behind the brush.
Machine changeover for different products is a relatively simple task. All machine functions are adjustable. No changeover of tooling is required.
The machine's frame and main structural components are heavy duty steel weldments, designed to provide years of trouble free service at maximum production. The rams ride in precision slides with hardened replaceable liners.
The upper horn pivots about a point at the rear of the machine with motion provided by a pair of hydraulic cylinders. To compensate for horn deflections, part thickness adjustments or other variables, the pivot point is mounted on an adjustable eccentric.
Stops will be provided to prevent insert contact when the trimmer is clamped with no material. The stops will be changed for different band thicknesses because of the eccentric adjustment. Gauges will be provided for clamp pressure and trimmer pressure.
A scrap bin will be provided to remove the trimmed and edge nipped material. The bin will be capable of being lifted with a fork lift.
