Rim Band Coiler
Purpose
The purpose of the rim band coiler is to form hoops from flat strips. The end products are formed into passenger car or light truck rims.
This machine is intended to operate automatically, being fed by a blank preparation system and ejecting the coiled blanks directly onto a flattening station.
The coiled products feature a short circumferential flat on both sides of the gap permitting the use of flat welder and weld trimmer tooling, while at the same time providing minimal out-of-roundness of the coiled hoops.
Description
Special efforts are put into the machine design to minimize machine deflections and to provide maximum consistency of the finished products.
The main coiling rolls are all supported on both ends with spherical roller antifriction bearings. By double supporting the rolls, machine deflections are controlled, reducing the tendency for the products to form spirals during bending.
The rolls are supported in a pair of rigid steel side frames, designed for extremely low operating stresses. The roll rotation is driven by a totally enclosed oil bath lubricated gearbox. Telescopic universal joint assemblies connect the gearbox to the rolls.
To provide complete adjustability of the machine, the outer coiling rolls of the machine are both adjustable via simple handwheel adjustments, permitting the setup personnel to tailor the bending radius and end match-up condition to the requirements of later processing. In addition, the exit roll is tiltable to compensate for spiral due to variable wall thickness of the material, uneven slitting burrs, variable material physical properties across the strip or other situations which may arise. Along with the main bending rolls, the coiling system includes a double-end supported I.D. tension pullback roll, permitting accurate control over the nominal rolled radius of the product.
Special attention is given the infeed guiding system which includes the entry guide table and feed rolls. The entry guide table features heavy duty cam followers to guide the blank perfectly perpendicular to the coiling rolls. The guide rolls on one side are spring loaded to push the product securely against the fixed rollers opposite them. A single handwheel adjusts the width of the guide table and special provisions are made to make the adjustment convertible to either "one side common" or "centerline" symmetrical product infeed.
The Coiler, Loader and Flattening Press are mounted on a moving base. The base is securely locked into position during machine operation and can be unlatched and moved away from the welder to allow increased maintenance access. The machine can not cycle without the base locked in the operating position.
The base can also be adjusted side to side to line up the band gap with the center of the welder electrodes.
